Workshop: Futureproofing your city by making it resilient
Worldwide more and more people are moving to the city. This makes cities bigger and more important, but at the same time vulnerable. In the past 15 years a significant increase is noticed globally in expected and sometimes unexpected shocks and stresses affecting a city like riots, flooding, poverty, social differences, heat waves leaving a city and its inhabitants in stress and discomfort.
These shocks and stresses cannot always be prevented however the way a city responds to it can be altered. A so called Resilience strategy enables a city to develop a pathway to identify, recognize and find ways to deal with these shocks and stresses in such a way that the city will be able to take pro-active action to minimize or prevent the effects of those shocks and stresses. The strategy supports cities around the world to become more resilient to physical, social and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century.
