“Nature isn’t just to look at and be amazed by, it’s a potential pool of knowledge”
Daan Roosegaarde is an innovative artist, creative thinker, and maker of social designs that explore the relationship between people, technology and space. His inspiration comes from nature’s gifts. As a child, Daan was fascinated by light-emitting fireflies and jellyfish. That fascination is visible in his visionary technological solutions for modern-day problems.
Well-known examples of his innovative designs include the Smart Highway, an illuminated road that collects sunlight during the day and glows at night, and the Smog Free Project, where the world’s largest outdoor purifier sucks in air and creates diamonds from smog. His Waterlicht design is a virtual flood that presents the beauty and power of water.
He has a master’s degree in architecture from the Berlage Institute. At Studio Roosegaarde, which he founded in 2007, he works with a team of designers and engineers building ‘Landscapes of the Future’ – smart, sustainable prototypes for the cities of tomorrow.
Daan has received numerous design and technology awards, and his designs have been exhibited in museums and public spaces around the world. He is also a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum, and was named Artist of the Year in the Netherlands in 2016.
